「It is exactly as in the description: great location in Hirayu-onsen close to the bus station and restaurants, very traditional rooms, fabulous private onsens, basic amenities.

We really enjoyed experiencing the uniquely Japanese approach to hotels, and really really enjoyed the onsens.
The hosts were wonderfully friendly, even with no common language.

Some local places were suggested which helped, and there is a konbini very close for snacks or breakfast.
You may also want to bring a larger towel as the traditional one was closer to what we would consider a hand-towel.
Definitely try the outdoor onsen - even on a very chilly night with snow on the ground, it was blissfully hot and relaxing becoming a highlight of our trip to Japan.
